Montana State Flower: Bitterroot

The Bitterroot herb produces the Bitterroot flower which is the State Flower of Montana. You might have heard of Bitterroot Valley which is a spectacular and famous valley in Montana. 

Lewis and Clark were introduced to Bitterroot on their expedition to Montana and brought it back with them. Indians had been using it for many years as a food and for medicine. It can live for over a year without water!

The flowers are usually Pink or Lavender, although it does come in White. But there are many White flowers, so why not color it in pale Pink or Lavender? The stamens are darker Pink. They bloom in Spring and Summer.

Missouri State Flower: White Hawthorn Blossom

The White Hawthorn Blossom is a beautiful White flower of the Hawthorn plant which grows up to 25 feet long and is related to Roses. After the blossoms the shrub produces a little fruit that looks like a tiny Apple and is edible. 

In fact wildlife of many kinds eat the Hawthorn fruit, and many people like to make jam or jelly from it. It also has medicinal uses. 

The Hawthorn plant grows all over Missouri and provides shelter and shade for animals too. There are many varieties of White Hawthorn, and they all have White flowers. 

It is said that there are at least 75 different types of Hawthorn plants in Missouri. They bloom in May generally.

Mississippi State Flower: Magnolia

Mississippi State Flower Coloring

Mississippi's State Flower is the Magnolia. Mississippi sits right next to Louisiana which shares the Magnolia as its State Flower. 

The Magnolia is a quintessential Southern flower, just the epitome of Southern style and grace. It has a wonderful scent and the tree is large providing shade from the hot sun. I remember it in Texas too. 

I'll tell you something though. The flowers drop on the sidewalks and create a huge mess! But still worth it for the shade and scent of these beautiful flowers. The blossoms come in Yellow and Pink and Red but mostly they are White.

Minnesota State Flower: Pink and White Lady Slipper

Minnesota State Flower Coloring

The Pink and White Lady Slipper is the State Flower of Minnesota. Lady Slippers (also called Moccasin flowers or Queen's Lady Slippers) can live up to 100 years but develop slowly, taking up to 16 years to produce their first flower. The Lady Slipper is actually a type of Orchid! 

Since 1925 this rare wildflower has been protected by Minnesota state law (it is illegal to pick the flowers or to uproot or unearth the plants). It is listed as threatened and endangered by many states. 

It became the official state flower in 1967. Like the name says, they are Pink and White. The bottom part of the flower is Pink, the rest is White. They bloom in June and July.

Michigan State Flower: Apple Blossom

The Apple Blossom is the State Flower of Michigan, just as it is of Arkansas. Since Apple trees grow all over North America it's not that surprising. 

The scent of the Apple Blossom is very nice! And the flowers are quite beautiful too. They range from White to Pink, and often are White with Pink trim. Their scent is the basis of many perfumes being quite sweet. They bloom from April to June. 

Michigan chose  the specific species of Pyrus coronaria for its State Flower which is also called Crab Apple. They are very small apples and are used only for jellies or jams, not for eating. (There is no reason why you can't eat them however.)

Massachusetts State Flower: Mayflower

Massachusetts State Flower Coloring

I just love that the Massachusetts State Flower is the Mayflower in honor of the ship that came to America housing the Pilgrims and landing in 1620, thus launching a colony in America.  

It grows all over the Eastern sea board of the United States and is the flower of a trailing shrub plant. The blooms are White or Pink. They bloom from March to July. 

They used to be widely used in wreaths and this led the legislature to make it illegal to pick them from public lands.

Maryland State Flower: Black Eyed Susan

Maryland State Flower Coloring

Contrary to their name, the middle of Black Eyed Susans are really a deep Brown or Brownish Purple and the petals are a sunny Yellow. They look beautiful in meadows which they are known to carpet in the Summer, from June to October. 

They grow on large plants up to 4 feet tall, and tend to drown out other flowers that might be near them. Bees and Butterflies are very attracted to them, but they are not known for their scent, just their beauty. 

They are also known as Yellow Daisies, and Brown Betty. They have 13 petals, and this was one reason they were chosen as the State Flower since Maryland was one of the original 13 states. (Sometimes they have more than 13, but always have an odd number of petals.)
