Virginia chose the magnificent American Dogwood as their State Flower. It grows on a tree that can reach as tall as 40 feet and has a very distinctive bark that resembles crocodile skin. It used to be boiled to fix mange in dogs which is how it got its name. The wood is used to make furniture too.

But back to the flower, Dogwood flowers are White, Pink or Red and look amazing when the trees bloom in late April or May. Thomas Jefferson grew Dogwood trees at his Monticello estate. In Autumn, Dogwood leaves turn colors of Red and Orange giving another gift to the senses.
