Ohio State Flower Coloring
Besides being used for many boutonnieres over the years, Carnations are the flowers Ohio chose as their State Flower. Specifically, the Red or Scarlet Carnation. Carnations also come in White, Pink, and Purple besides Red, but Ohio uses the Red one.
They have a lovely fragrance and last a very long time, so are popular in bouquets. The Greek botanist Theopharastus named them Dianthus (botanical name) from two Greek Words - "dios", referring to the god Zeus, and "anthos", meaning flower. Carnations are thus known as the "The Flowers of God." They bloom from May through July.
