Vermont State Flower: Red Clover

Vermont State Flower Coloring

red clover photo

Vermont chose Red Clover as its State Flower, quite an unusual choice! But Farmers grow Clover as food for cows and other animals. It is even called "cow grass." Honeybees gather nectar from the flowers for delicious honey. Some people use it to make tea. It also has many uses in Herbal medicine.

Red Clover originated in Europe and was brought to the New World by the settlers. Despite its name, it's not usually Red, but Purple or Lavender in color, although it does come in a deep beautiful Red, so go ahead and color it Red if you want. It's a small flower, usually only an inch or so across. It blooms in the Spring, usually April and May.
