Idaho State Flower: Syringa

Idaho State Flower Coloring

syringa photo

The Syringa flower is the blossom of a woody shrub. The plant can grow 10 feet tall, and the stems are very useful for many things including pipe stems and bows and arrows.

Meriwether Lewis wrote about Syringa when he made his famous journey to the Northwest United States. The flowers are very fragrant, with a scent sort of like Orange blossoms, so they are sometimes called Mock Orange.

Syringa blossoms are Snow White with Orange-Yellow stamens. They bloom from April to June.

I chose to draw this close up of the flowers that top the branches, just a tiny portion of one of the little clusters.  For the New Hampshire State Flower which is the Purple Lilac and a type of Syringa, I drew clusters on branches, so you can see how they look as part of the larger plant there. But here you see one of the little clusters by itself.

Hawaii State Flower: Hibiscus

Hawaii State Flower Coloring

hibiscus photo

The state of Hawaii is a botanical wonderland and my favorite state in the USA. Over 50% of the botanical species there grow nowhere else on earth! I've been to every island at least once and would love to visit again as I consider it paradise on earth.

They chose the Hibiscus as their State Flower probably because it  is so distinctive that everyone associates it with Hawaii. I love them and had them growing in my California garden for many years. The Hibiscus flower blooms year round!

They are available in many colors so don't be shy, color it any color you choose! Every island grows them in several colors. However, the State Flower is actually the one that blooms in Yellow, so if you want to be absolutely authentic in your depiction of the State Flower, color it Yellow all over, including the center stem, with a little Brownish Red in the center below that stem.

Georgia State Flower: Cherokee Rose

Georgia State Flower Coloring

cherokee rose photo

The state of Georgia picked the Cherokee Rose as their State Flower. It's pure White with Yellow stamens, and has a beautiful scent that is sort of like cloves. But like the song says "every rose has its thorn" and the Cherokee Rose is excessively thorny, so be careful if you try to pick some.

The Cherokee Rose is actually native to Southern China and Taiwan and Vietnam and Laos, all tropical climates, so it's easy to see why it would flourish in Georgia! Humidity plus!

After the flowers fall off, the plants produce the Rose Hip fruit, which you see on Vitamin C capsules (if they use it,) because it's a potent source of that Vitamin C.

I'm actually surprised that the Peach Blossom isn't the State Flower of Georgia since they call their ladies "Georgia Peaches" but the Cherokee Rose harkens back to the time when the Cherokee Indians had their reservation there so that's appropriate too.

Florida State Flower: Orange Blossom

Florida State Flower Coloring

Florida, the land of sunshine and beaches, and the scent of Oranges! And don't forget the crocodiles and alligators and Disneyworld.  I loved it both of the times I visited. Their state flower is another fruit blossom, the Orange Blossom. So first you get to see the beautiful flower, and then you get to eat a magnificent fruit that is one of Nature's marvels when it comes to vitamins!

Orange trees grow really well in Florida, lucky for the people who live there! If I lived there I would have them all over my yard. Their scent is wonderful when they bloom in the Spring. (March and April) The blossoms are White with little Orange dots at the end of their stamens.

Wow, the Peach Blossom is a beautiful flower, and it promises one of nature's most wonderful fruits is on its way. I love peaches, don't you? Delaware is a tiny state up in the New England region of the USA where they get that magnificent Autumn foliage that people drive for miles and days to see.

The Peach Blossom is a Spring flower though! So don't forget Spring if you are thinking of a trip to New England. The trees are lovely then too. The Peach blossom is either light Pink, or light Purple with a darker center and dark dots at the end of its stamens. The scent is magnificent!

Connecticut State Flower: Mountain Laurel

Connecticut State Flower Coloring

I visited Connecticut in Autumn during the changing of the leaves so it was amazingly beautiful. We toured the parks with all those beautiful trees and colorful leaves, and the sea shore too with the darling little harbors and quaint towns. Gorgeous!

The Mountain Laurel is the state flower of Connecticut. It's a member of the Heather family of flowers so one of my favorites. Its blossoms are either White or pale Pink. The little dots at the end of the stamens are dark Pink. They bloom in May or June.

Colorado State Flower: Rocky Mountain Columbine

Colorado State Flower Coloring

rocky mountain columbine flower photo

Colorado is such a beautiful state, one that I was lucky to live in for 4 years when I was finishing my Art degree. (B.A. from UCCS.) The Rocky Mountains divide the state. The Eastern part of it is pretty flat, then the mountains soar into the sky and have peaks and canyons and vistas and mesas and streams and incomparable beauty.

The Rocky Mountain Columbine is the State Flower of Colorado. It has Blue-Violet petals and spurs, a White cup and Yellow center. It is illegal to pick this flower on State lands or even in private gardens unless the owner gives permission. They want to preserve them as they are rare.

California State Flower: California Poppy

California State Flower Coloring

california poppy photo

The California Poppy grows everywhere in California. You see the dots of Golden Orange in the middle of the highways, on the banks lining the highways, and in people's yards. So cheerful and one of the easier flowers to color too. They bloom from March through May. Thankfully they are drought resistant, so very easy to grow in the dry desert that most of California is.

I lived in California for over 30 years, mostly in Southern California, but for 2 years I lived in Monterey. I felt blessed to live in such a beautiful state for every single second of every day.

Arkansas State Flower: Apple Blossom

Arkansas State Flower Coloring

Arkansas is a riot of color in the Spring from the Apple Blossoms. Different varieties of apples bloom at different times, with Apple trees in the South (including Arkansas) producing their blooms earlier than the ones up North. The blossoms are Pink and White.

We have Apple trees in Ireland too, and I love how they look and their fragrance. Arkansas is a beautiful state with many, many trees. The Apple tree is just one of them. If you ever get the chance go see it. The lake area is gorgeous!

Oh how could we forget such a beautiful flower, Alaska's Forget Me Not. Alaska is still on my list of places to visit, as I have not made it there, but from the photos I see I am sure I would dearly love it and would not forget it!

The Forget Me Not is one of only a few flowers in Nature that are colored a true Blue! The center is Yellow with a little White around it, but the petals are Blue. I love it for that! The Forget Me Not blooms from July through September.

Alabama State Flower: Camellia

Alabama State Flower: Camellia

camellia photo

Here's Alabama's beautiful State Flower, the Camellia.
Camellias grow in lots of other places too. We have them in Ireland where I live now. When I think of Alabama, I think of thousands of trees with vines growing all over them, and mansions set in the middle of clearings in the middle of those trees, with steam rising up from the ground. It's hot and muggy, but it's beautiful! Camellias thrive there!

Camellias are actually native to Asia, and are usually Red, White, or shades of Pink. They bloom from November to April, with the peak time being January and February.

Arizona State FLower: Saguaro Cactus Blossom

Arizona State Flower Coloring

Saguaro cactus

Here's an example of one of my coloring pages. I love cactus blooms, don't you? They don't bloom very often, but wow! I used to drive out to the desert in the Spring to see the cacti bloom because they were so beautiful. And I used make prickly pear cactus jelly, yum! I actually love Ocotillo cactus the best but this is the one Arizona chose as their state flower.  Don't touch, just look is the best motto around cactus!

Coloring Pencils for Coloring the State Flowers

Do you need colored pencils or water color pencils? For coloring botanical drawings I actually prefer water color pencils as they look as if they have been painted with water colors like many of the paintings of botanical flowers that were so popular in the 1920's. (They have actually remained popular ever since.) Aurora Art Supplies has water color pencils that come with 2 paint brushes so you can smear your pigment and get a water color effect. They come with a mini coloring book of botanical flowers too.

Aurora Art Supplies also has a set of 48 different coloring pencils in a plastic tube and a mini coloring book by me is included as a free bonus. Just click the photo to order this beautiful set of colored pencils for all your coloring projects!
